For those with some mechanical ability, minor scooter repairs usually do not present a large problem. However, for those who doubt their handy-work skills, scooter repairs are best left to professionals. With that said, many performance problems with scooters are relatively common and straightforward.

A fuel leak is a simple problem with a number of causes. Sometimes the lines from the fuel tank to the carburetor simply need to be tightened. When fuel is leaking from the clear overflow line, the carburetor may need to be replaced or a screw on the bowl may require tightening.

A scooter engine may stall if there is a blockage in the engine filter. Blocks or clogs can occur in the air filter or fuel line, so both should be checked. A sluggish engine is often a telltale sign of blockage; before a stall actually occurs, riders should check for possible clogs.

If a scooter stalls while in motion, the rider may be flooding the engine. By holding the throttle wide open, it will flood the engine and cause the scooter to break down. Scooter engines, like car engines, need to be broken in before accelerated to high speeds.

A variety of problems may be the culprit if a scooter simply will not start. If the scooter has a two-stroke engine, owners should check to make sure the gas and oil mixture is not off-balance. If the gas and oil ratio is appropriate, one should pump the primer bulb on the underside of the carburetor until the gas has reached the carburetor itself. If the engine still will not start, then tweaking the throttle may help. A word of caution: trying to start an engine too many times may cause excess fuel to collect in the cylinder. For this reason, one should remove the spark plug so the excess fuel can evaporate. If the engine still will not start, then the carburetor itself may be the problem.

Adjusting the breaks is a minor scooter repair. To do this, one needs to remove the adjustable screw next to the brake lever and move it to the desired position. If this does not help, then the wire connected to the caliper may need to be tightened.

Several factors can cause a chain to keep falling off. For one, it may not be aligned properly. If the rear tire is crooked or askew, one should loosen the nuts securing the wheel and adjust the tension screws until the wheel is straight.

Many scooter owners will admit maintenance and scooter repair is not just a fond hobby, but a labor of love.
