There are daily modes of transportation: traveling by car, train, bus, bike or foot. And then there are those things people ride for purposes other than going to work, running errands or other business. These are the vehicles people ride for recreational fun.

Gas-powered scooters fit into the fun category. They are more toys of recreational enjoyment than serious modes of transportation. After all, I have not seen any gas scooter locks at public transportation stops lately.

Like a rough version of the motorcycle, gas scooters have some outstanding features allowing light, yet rough play. Many gas scooters have basic amenities, such as dual belt drives, small engines (usually 40 cc), front and rear disc brakes, and a kick stand. On standing models, gas tanks usually are located above the rear wheel. These features make gas scooters seem like a template for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

However, their purpose could not be farther from a motorcycle's. Most gas scooters are long and light, but have something extra allowing a bit of edgy fun on the side. They are small enough to pedal around on private property or take on vacation to other terrains.

Then there are more mechanically-developed less recreationally-derived gas scooters. They may have a speedometer, head and brake lights, front and rear shocks, an automatic transmission, a drive chain and keyed ignition. This type of gas-powered scooter is closer to the adult version used for transportation; however is probably will be purchased for sport and recreation. A vehicle like this can easily be confused with an all-terrain-vehicle (ATV), but it is by no means as durable as an ATV and cannot withstand such strenuous wear and tear.

If contemplating purchasing a gas scooter, remember they tend to be priced from the high $100 region to the high $2,000.

Gas scooters are designed for light, frivolous fun. They may not be the best way to get to work. They may not be suitable for rough riding, such as on dunes and rocky hillsides.  But gas-powered scooters are perfect for nature trails, touring neighborhoods and countryside joyrides. They have the ability to allow riders to really absorb and revel in their surroundings while in transit, unlike the confines of a car ride.
